Abstract: The Bangladesh Center for Communication Programs (BCCP) created the “Nijeke Jano” or “Know Yourself” multimedia package with technical assistance from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Center for Communication Programs (CCP), the Health Communication Partnership (HCP), and several local partners including the Adolescent Reproductive Health Working Group. This is supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Mission in Dhaka. The project’s integrated approach was developed through a participatory process with Bangladeshi adolescents, who added invaluable nuances, insights, and perspectives at every stage – from program design to story development to the production of materials.

The Know Yourself campaign aims to increase the age of first pregnancy and sexual debut; decrease risky sexual behaviors; reduce sexually transmitted infections (STI) and HIV transmission; delay age at marriage; and decrease maternal mortality. Know Yourself’s multimedia components include question and answer booklets on puberty, sexuality, unwanted pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, STIs, and other family health information; four 26-minute interactive videos that feature adolescents; color-coded facilitator’s guides; comic books that allow programmers to address sensitive issues; and national television and radio magazine programs featuring adolescents hosting a variety show.

This hanging sign was designed to be used by booksellers to promote the sale of the four "Know Yourself" comic books in bookstalls and stores. less

Overall, 1702 adolescents and 1203 parents were interviewed in the spring of 2004 and 1827 adolescents and 1276 parents were interviewed in the summer... more
Summative Evaluation: The program implemented a pilot study of the ARH materials in three rural areas of Bangladesh. This pilot study included baseline and follow-up cross-sectional surveys of adolescents and their parents in the implementation and selected comparison areas. Overall, 1702 adolescents and 1203 parents were interviewed in the spring of 2004 and 1827 adolescents and 1276 parents were interviewed in the summer of 2005. The main findings from this study include: Nearly 60 percent of all adolescents in the implementation areas reported participating in the ARH group sessions; Participants in the implementation sites had greater knowledge of puberty and adolescence, pregnancy, maternal health and HIV/AIDS than either non-participants or adolescents living in the comparison sites; Participants were more likely to have discussed RH issues with a parent or elder family member than either non-participants or adolescents living in the comparison sites; The program did not have a noticeable effect on adolescents' perceptions of self-esteem or problem-solving ability; Compared to parents in the comparison areas, parents in the implementation areas indicated a greater level of participation in household decision-making by adolescents. less
