|  | Abstract: A self-instructional reference guide developed for use by the five NGOs as part of the Expanded Programme on Immunization in Nigeria. The Introduction explains that many Nigerian children die from the six childhood diseases--measles, TB, whooping cough, tetanus, polio and diptheria. Also includes instructions for the learner on how to use the module and a pretest. Each section incudes practice exercises.... more Abstract: A self-instructional reference guide developed for use by the five NGOs as part of the Expanded Programme on Immunization in Nigeria. The Introduction explains that many Nigerian children die from the six childhood diseases--measles, TB, whooping cough, tetanus, polio and diptheria. Also includes instructions for the learner on how to use the module and a pretest. Each section incudes practice exercises. Section I covers the expanded program on immunization and gives the signs and symptoms for each of the six diseases. Also covers immunization, how it works, the names of individual vaccines and which diseases they protect against, the recommended immunization schedule, side effects of the vaccines. Also covers myths and rumors about immunization, especially with regard to giving tetanus vaccines to pregnant women. Discusses the importance of keeping vaccines in a cold condition or "the cold chain" and the immunization record card. Section II covers acute diarrhea and dehydration. Explains how to mix ORT solution. Also discusses malnutrition and prevention of diarrhea and malnutrition. Includes myths and mis-information about diarrhea. Setion III covers social mobilization and explains how NGOs can mobilize people. Suggests that NGOs create 'EPI friendship links,' and how to get families involved. Also discusses baby tracking--which is a way of following up and checking the immunizationr eocrds of all children under the age of two years in a certain area. Includes a sample baby-tracking slip. Each of the five NGOs is also assigned a particular role in the EPI campaign. These are described here. Also explains how to earn a badge, how to plan a good training curriculum. Includes a sample workshop session and curriculum. Also coves how to use lecture, role play, games and exercises in training. Includes a glossary. less
