Organization Profile: KIDS & TEENS CONCERNS (K&TC)
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
K&TC is a non-profit, non-governmental organization founded
in 2002. It was established to promote, support and advance
the efforts of government and all other stakeholders involved
in children and youth development.

TARGET GROUP: K&TC works with in school, out of school youths
and children, with emphasis on street or working children (e.g.
apprentices). K&TC provides aids for children by creating an
enabling environment and empowering their parents to achieve
their full potentials

VISION: K&TC hopes to secure the future. A world where
children and young people are supported to achieve their
full potentials, assume more control over their lives, and
actively contribute to the sustainable development of
their communities.

MISSION: To work for and with young people to design
and implement projects that will improve the health and
socio-economic welfare of all youths, regardless of race,
gender, social, religious and ethnic affiliation.

OBJECTIVES:
To initiate, design and implement intervention projects
in development activities.
To produce Information, Education and Communication
(IEC) materials and communicate intervention projects
for target groups.
To improve the health of young people and children
through educative programs
To empower young people economically through programs
that will support vocational training, provide business
education, and facilitate self-employment ventures.
To support the development of a sustainable environment
through program that will preserve, develop and manage
our abundant human, natural and material resources.
To provide psychosocial support for the less privileged and
people affected and infected with HIV/AIDS/STIs.

CURRENT PROGRAMME: The current programme is tagged
"Omo se suuru" meaning " Be Patient, my friend". It is an adolescent
programme on reproductive health, behaviour skills, values, and
HIV/AIDS/"Drugs". It is based on a narrative story, role plays and
group discussions designed to give adolescents the opportunity to
develop a comprehensive and realistic set of values and behaviour
skills. This programme is about to finish its design stage.

The programme will be conducted through 36 weekly sessions
in groups. A sample of 200 adolescents (gender balance) will
be enrolled and will randomly be assigned to small mixed groups
of 10 members, 5 boys and 5 girls each who will meet with a
trained facilitator. The programme team will consist of a Programme
Coordinator, 2 researchers and 10 facilitators which shall be
responsible for 2 groups each. The age range for the adolescents
shall be 13-15 years. This age range was chosen because they
will still be experimenting with new sexual behaviours, which in
most cases, are neither routine nor permanent.

OTHER ACTIVITIES: Other activities include advocacy, edutainment,
peer education, capacity building, workshops/seminars/conferences,
publications and information dissemination, a resource center/library,
networking and information sharing, behavioral change
communication (BCC).

STRATEGY: K&TC does not re-invent the wheel; rather it combines
models from the world of international development with indigenous
solutions, to address youth development in its larger social context.

COLLABORATION/PARTNERSHIP: K&TC works with other
stakeholders (such as NGOs, government, private sector etc) to
achieve its objectives.

FUNDING: K&TC is supported through donations from donor agencies,
private organizations, individuals and consultancy services.

ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE: K&TC has a 7-member Board of
Trustees. The Program Manager, assisted by a Programme Management
Team (PMT) oversees the daily operations of the organization. K&TC also
works with consultants and volunteers. K&TC has a national network
of volunteers who are serving as organs of enlightenment in their communities.

K&TC VOLUNTEERS: This is one of the most important elements
of a strong civic society. K&TC believes that the basis for such voluntarism
exist in Nigeria culture and be harnessed to realistically address the needs
of the young people.

K&TC recognizes that many people aspire to contribute positively to a
better society and will be willing to assist if offered the right opportunity.
Consequently, each person can contribute a little of his or her time,
services and resources to development. This is our social responsibility.

K&TC appreciate the contributions of its current volunteers and uses
this medium to seek for new volunteers, irrespective of race, gender,
social, religious and ethnic affiliation.

We hope to benefit from your valuable contribution.

K&TC operates youth clubs in schools and communities for out-of-school
youths, they are empowered to serve as organs of enlightenment to
their peers in-school and their communities.

K&TC would like to be connected with people working in health
communication and development to facilitate research , acquisition
of materials knowledge. Also want training packages on CD-ROM
that can be used for training of trainers.

Letter from Hoenyefia Noah Nash about the value
of students working in hospitals
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Dear Sir,
I am one of the students leaders on campus fighting for
students rights. I must say that we as a union have started
something that will educate students on AIDS. We had that
support from your outfit . We had a video about the South's
experience. We are hoping that through these conferences
that are going to be organized, students will not be left out
since the majority of some students in Ghana have tested
positive especially in the university. I also believe that
students should be our target for now, since sex activities
are high.

Please do you have students helping you care for those
patients in your hospital or agency? If we can start that for
now they know how AIDS can kill. Please suggest
to some policy makers that people should be involved
in hospitals etc.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Dear HCMN

I am a post graduate in Biotechnology (thesis on Tuberculosis)
from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), a premier
medical institute in New Delhi, India. In 1998, I and a colleague
who was pursuing his PhD in Biotechnology (Tuberculosis and
Leprosy) from AIIMS established a specialized company for
Communicating Life Sciences Effectively with the primary
focus on healthcare.

For the last 5 years we, at bioPiXL, a division of PiXL
Communication Pvt Ltd, have been developing communication
strategies, technical copy, complete creatives and production
support through print, print collaterals, films, multimedia (with 2D, 3D
animation), digital composites and web based communications
for our clientele.

We are deeply entrenched with healthcare communications and
have now extended our scope of work into implementation, strategic
planning and marketing of hospital projects and mobile clinics in
collaboration with leading healthcare professionals and state governments.

We would be very keen to join a network such as yours for we
feel that sitting in India we have access to a vast population
with several health issues to address and there are not many
specialized and dedicated communication companies like us
in this country. We would benefit by interacting with the more
developed healthcare communicators and in turn we could provide
insight to the specific healthcare needs and communication tools
that are more effective in India and South East Asia.

Organizing workshops and seminars in India and South East Asia to
promote healthcare communications in these countries with your
support could be another area of widening this network. The
possibilities of collaboration are many, the first step is to reach out
to each other.

Hailu Zeleke Woldetsadik
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Dear Sirs;
I want to join you because I want to share ideas, information and
samples of health communication materials with professionals
around the world.

As you know, Ethiopia is one of the poorest nations in the world.
Poverty, food insecurity, diseases, draught, backwardness, illiteracy
and unemployment are the main problems of the country, above all,
HIV/AIDS. Today, in Ethiopia, HIV/AIDS is destroying the working
force of the country. Although government and NGOs have been
trying to educate the people about the virus and combating strategies
in different media, behavioral changes are not seen yet. The spread
of the virus are continuing. This indicted those anti-AIDS campaigns
should continue in organized ways in the future, especially in the
countryside where more than 80% of the society live. Therefore, I,
as responsible citizen, believe that every Ethiopian have to have
contribute something in the campaign.

For your information, my name is Hailu Zeleke Woldetsadik, 27.
I have a BA degree in History from Addis Ababa University and
Diploma in Journalism. I run a small advertising agency, Negarit,
here in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. I started the business three months
ago. I named the agency "Negarit" because Negarit was the most
common way that news, information and decrees were made public
in the past in Ethiopia. Negarit is a traditional drum-like instrument
that summoned the people to hear public proclamations, information
and news. Before I started the business, I was working as a
reporter on different private weekly newspapers.

Now under Negarit advertising, we are preparing to publish a
monthly magazine that focuses on HIV/AIDS and related issues.
The magazine printing costs will cover by the fund that will get
from organizations that works with HIV/AIDS. That helps us to
distribute the magazine freely throughout the country.

Therefore I hope your website and listserv are helping us by
providing information, samples of health communication materials
with other colleagues and advice and suggestions from others
working in the field.

My address is the following:
