USEFULNESS OF INCLUDING ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE, TESTIMONIALS
AND QUALITATIVE RESEARCH RESULTS IN PATIENT EDUCATION MATERIALS
**********************************************
Mary-Doug Wright, Librarian / Information Specialist at the Centre for Health
Services & Policy Research in Vancouver, BC Canada writes that she is looking
for discussion of the usefulness of including anecdotal evidence, testimonials and
qualitative research results in patient education materials. What is the opinion of
experts in the field on inclusion of non-evidence-based therapies or treatments in
these materials? Is it risky to do so? She has already searched Medline, Embase,
CINAHL, Psycinfo, ERIC, Dissertation Abstracts and the NLM's Locatorplus so far.

Essential Nutrition Actions Electronic Toolkit
**********************************************
http://www.basics.org/new/tools/ena/index.html
Malnutrition is one of the most important public health problems in developing countries.
BASICS II has made nutrition a central piece of its child health package witha focus on
health and nutrition. Nutrition is defined as a group of evidence-based micronutrient and
infant feeding interventions known as Essential Nutrition Actions (ENA). The ENA
approach and related activities in Community Based Growth Promotion
(CBGP) provide a framework to integrate key nutrition interventions with other activities.
This toolkit includes lots of great resources, including some health education materials
in the Community -Based Growth Promotion section at
http://www.basics.org/new/tools/ena/CBGP_Tools.html

I recently received information on the Health Communication Materials
Network at JHU. Our organization, the International Center for Research
on Women (ICRW) is very interested in participating in HCMN. We are a
mid-sized research group, founded in 1976, that conducts research, provides
technical support and undertakes advocacy to improve the social and
health status of women in developing countries.

We produce several publications each year--research reports, information
bulletins, postcards/posters, etc... and we would be happy to share our
work and learn from others in the field. As librarian, I would be the contact
person for HCMN. Please let me know if there are any steps I need to
take to become a member. Thanks very much for your assistance.

I'm working on the other side of the globe on the East Coast of
New Zealand's north island, in a fairly isolated region known as
Tairawhiti, the main centre is called Gisborne. I am currently co-ordinating
a Women's Health project focusing on minority groups, one being the
indigenous population; Maori. Through the project, we have identified
a regional lack of focus on Women's Health issues and we are keen
to set up a Women's Health collective to drive the development of a
Women's Health Centre to provide an integrated information and
health care service. Publicising it comes first, hence the discovery of
your website.
