[Click on the attachment to see the poster itself]

28 x 22 cm. poster which is a color photograph showing the lower torsos of three soccer players dressed in red uniform shorts with their hands crossed. The poster reads:
Choisissez votre tactique de jeu pour vaincre le SIDA... : CAN 2002 : Protégez-vous! Utilisez une capote [English: [Choose your game plan to avoid AIDS... CAN 2000 : Protect yourself! Use a condom]. It was produced by the Caring Understanding Partners (CUP) Initiative with assistance from Johns Hopkins University Center for Communication Programs (JHU/CCP). Funded by USAID.

Background information: The largest sports event on the continent of Africa - the 23rd African Cup of Nations - was held in Mali in January and February 2002. Together with its partners in Mali, Ghana, Nigeria and Burkina Faso, JHU/CCP launched the "Play for life/Jouer pour la vie" regional HIV/AIDS prevention campaign. The campaign harnessed the positive energy and attention of millions of Africans, particularly young men, which was focused on this tournament. The campaign's messages of hope and concrete information about how to prevent HIV/AIDS, delivered through role model players and African leaders, aimed to influence their fans' attitudes and behaviors around HIV/AIDS. The campaign's slogan was "What's your game plan?" Campaign messages used football terminology to encourage young people to avoid risky ("red and yellow card") behaviors and to develop effective, personal "game plans" to protect themselves from HIV.

Organization for Women & Children Development
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Liaqat Masih <>, Projects Director for the Organization for Women & Children Development, writes:

Organization for Children & Women Development (OCWD) was formed and is run by the women though we have some committed male members also. We have taken a humble start and focusing on the most neglected and underprivileged women and children in Pakistan. We are focusing women and children residing in distant rural localities and urban areas, which are neglected and suffering from gigantic problems. We are enclosing here with our aims and objectives for your consideration and look forward for a good relationship and cooperation. We want to become members of HCMN for the following reasons, We want to learn as much as can be possible to create awareness regarding prevention from STDs and HIV/AIDS. There is a drastic need to train female Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) and Health Councilors regarding creating awareness among illiterate people of rural areas as well as urban localities of low income people. In both the above mentioned areas TBAs can play a vital role as they are closely associated with the females and in our society it is very difficult to discuss about Reproductive Health issues, contraceptives, STDs and HIV/AIDS, particularly with the women and female youth.
Through need assessment study of some of above mentioned we derived some ideas, which we want to materialize by submitting a concept paper / project proposal to JHU CCP, if it does support. (as we got this idea from the " What's New" and your website) . We want to establish a training/resource center for Reproductive Health issues, Contraceptives, STDs and HIV/AIDS, (not for commercial purposes) in Pakistan and in this regard we request other fellows in the listserv, to contribute in either way.

Dear Colleagues,

The Alan Guttmacher Institute (AGI) seeks your recommendations of individuals and organizations working in Malawi to improve young people's sexual and reproductive health. AGI, in collaboration with partners in Burkina Faso, Ghana, Malawi, Kenya and Uganda, is conducting a five-year, in-depth research and communications project on the sexual and reproductive behaviors, attitudes and motivations of young people in Sub-Saharan Africa. The project, "Protecting the Next Generation: Understanding HIV Risk Among
Youth," is supported by The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and The Rockefeller Foundation.

The ultimate goal of this project is to communicate new, policy and program-relevant knowledge to a range of audiences, including health care providers, program administrators, media, and government officials, in each focus country, regionally and internationally. Beth Fredrick, Vice President, Communications and Development and Jennifer Nadeau, Ph.D., Director of Communications plan to visit Malawi this summer to learn more about current efforts and what is needed in terms of linking research
focusing on young people to program and policy development. During the trip we hope to meet with nongovernmental organizations, government officials, journalists, program administrators, educators, health care providers and marketing professionals. If you think that we should meet with you or any of your colleagues there, please let us know.

Feel free to contact us for additional information on "Protecting the Next Generation".

Thank you for your participation,

GHANA URBAN HEALTH ASSESSMENT

The Environmental Health Project conducted an assessment of urban health needs in Ghana in July 2002. Although Ghana's cities are growing rapidly, national development policies and international assistance packages have not yet focused attention on the needs of urban populations. USAID/Ghana requested this assessment in preparation for a strategic planning exercise that will determine the future direction of its population, health and nutrition assistance. I am the president and initiator of The Conservators. The Conservators is an organization helping to bridge the gap between research and the rural population . It has been observed that most health research have not been well diseminated to the rural class which in most cases are the most vulnerable to disease attacks . It can easily be seen that lack of infrastructure, illiteracy , unavalabilty of social amenities, no acess to information and materials have been a major problem. Hence the need to take this informations to
their door step. In a recent study on the evaluation of extension media in the diffussion of innovations in Oyo State Nigeria, it was rightly observed that the rural populace got most of its information needs through extension with little or no acess to electronic or print media. Health facilities in most developing countries are not in the best form especiallty in the rural areas. Most health problems faced through out the world today are endemic in the rural areas due to lack of information on health hazards and related problems in developing countries. Hence the need for this gap to bridged to help avert the costly consequences of ignorance. I have as a matter of urgency taken it upon myself to teach a rural class on haelth issues to through the use of proper extension work. To me a healthy ruaral class brings about a strong agriculture. Only when the rural class can understand health issues can the health sector claim success. It should therefore be noted that a handful of information materials goes a long way in helping to acheive these aims. We appreciate our mambership of HCMN and we are also proud to be a member. Thanks in anticipation as look forward to hearing from you soon. We wish to request that other members' addresses also be sent to us . We hope to send in our latest research paper on extension and health information in developing countries to you as soon as it is completed.
Yours faithfully
OYEBISI .B.OLUSEYI
